Guardians of the Galaxy: James Gunn Reveals Joke Disney Had Him Cut

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn reveals the joke from Vol. 1 Disney asked him to remove, and it involves killing John Stamos.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn shares the joke Disney asked him to cut from Vol. 1. Gunn has become one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most popular directors, thanks to his deft leading of the Guardians franchise. When the first movie came out in 2014, its humor and focus on the cosmic side of the MCU was a departure for Marvel. Though enjoyable on their own, the Guardians have also become a valuable asset to the Avengers movies, making characters like Thor even more entertaining through his interactions with them.

Gunn is largely responsible for the success of Guardians of the Galaxy, thanks to his writing and directing roles on both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He'll also be back for the third movie in the series, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though not without controversy. In 2018, some offensive tweets from Gunn resurfaced, prompting Disney to fire him. However, the company then rehired Gunn the next year, due to his genuine apology and support from members of the Guardians cast. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's release date hasn't been announced yet, due to Gunn's work on DC's The Suicide Squad.

Despite his temporary firing, Disney and Gunn still have a solid relationship, as evidenced by their willingness to hire him back. Gunn showed this earlier today, revealing a joke Disney asked him to cut from Guardians of the Galaxy, while also making it clear he harbors no ill will toward the studio because of it:

As the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are full of irreverent humor, it's interesting that this particular joke didn't make the cut. It's hard to know Disney's reasoning for the decision, though Drax implying he wanted to kill John Stamos might have had something to do with it. The existing line in the movie is funny on its own, though the Drax part certainly adds to it. Disney does have something of a preexisting relationship with Stamos, thanks to his role on ABC shows (including Full House) and an appearance in 2019's The Little Mermaid Live!. This might have contributed to the line being cut, or it may have just been because Stamos is such a beloved pop culture figure.

Gunn's framing of the cut joke is also important, as it shows how grateful he is Disney never forced him to get rid of the line, leading to a compromise instead. The studio's willingness to let Gunn have his way on most things clearly paid off; The Guardians of the Galaxy movies remain two of the strongest in the MCU. Hopefully, Gunn and Disney's partnership helps make Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 another Marvel success story.
