Marvel’s Avengers Will Let Players Wall Run As Captain America

Marvel’s Avengers Lead Combat Designer Vince Napoli describes Captain America’s wall-running abilities on Reddit, as well as some acrobatic combat.

Captain America is one of the most athletically-gifted human beings in the Marvel universe, and the lead combat designer for Marvel’s Avengers has revealed that players will be able to sprint, double jump, and wall run while playing as America’s greatest hero in the upcoming game. Set for release on September 4, Square Enix’s team-based action/adventure title will feature Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as they try to rebuild and regroup after a devastating terrorist attack by A.I.M. - as well as the supposed death of Captain America himself.

While not as powerful as fellow Avengers like Thor or the Hulk, Captain America is still a cut above the average human in terms of strength, speed, and agility due to the Super Soldier Serum that transformed the frail and sickly Steve Rogers into the mighty champion of freedom he is today. Fans are more familiar with his incredible athletic skill thanks to Chris Evans’s performance as the Star-Spangled Man in the highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he was shown to be able to hold back the much larger and stronger Thanos The Mad Titan via sheer willpower alone during Avengers: Infinity War. Whether or not the good Captain turns out to really be dead in Marvel’s Avengers (an ending achievement leak a couple of months ago suggests otherwise), it seems that players will be able to step into his patriotically-colored uniform to perform some truly spectacular feats in the game.

Under the Reddit handle of vnapoli3313, Marvel’s Avengers Lead Combat Designer Vince Napoli (who also worked on 2018's highly successful God Of War) discussed Captain America’s wall running and double-jumping abilities in the game on the r/Marvel’sAvengersProject subreddit late last week. “Captain's wall run is a set distance, but being able to chain them together by jumping back and forth, double jumping, pole swinging, etc. makes it really friendly,” Napoli eagerly informed fans, sharing, “A well timed double jump off a wall run can also be used to re-trigger the wall run. His navigation is really flexible and active.” He went on to describe the good Captain’s in-game fighting style as “very acrobatic.”

While initially derided by many due to some off-model character designs (and fans comparing Captain America’s new armored look to the notorious “hockey pads” meme from The Dark Knight), Marvel’s Avengers has managed to build up considerable fan optimism due to developer Crystal Dynamics correcting said models in a later trailer and promising to feature several fan-favorite characters like Ms. Marvel/Kamala Khan and the villainous Taskmaster. The game is the most recent in a wave of new high-quality Marvel titles in recent years, such as Insomniac’s record-selling Spider-Man game for the PlayStation 4, the upcoming Iron Man VR for PlayStation VR headsets, or even a rumored Daredevil game for the PS5.

Given Captain America’s impressive displays of strength and speed in the films and comics, it should come as no surprise that the Star-Spangled Sentinel of liberty would lend himself to some fun parkour-style gameplay in Marvel’s Avengers. It’s also reassuring to hear that the game’s production crew is taking great care to ensure that each member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is a blast to play, be that the Hulk’s unstoppable rage or Captain America’s fast-paced wall running - skills that players will be able to unleash themselves when Marvel’s Avengers is released on September 4.
