MCU: The Actors Who Almost Played Scarlet Witch | Screen Rant

MCU’s Scarlet Witch is played by Elizabeth Olsen, but actors Saoirse Ronan, Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer and Lindsay Lohan were considered.

Before Elizabeth Olsen landed the part, there were other actresses that Marvel considered for the role of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in the MCU. Debuting in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron alongside her brother, Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver, Wanda has appeared in a total of four films thus far. Initially portrayed as a villain — she and her brother assisted Ultron against the Avengers in an effort to avenge the destruction of Sokovia — she has since redeemed herself and is now considered one of the good guys.

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Wanda still has a bright future ahead of her in the MCU. Marvel is often criticized for their adaptation of the character since she's typically relegated to a side role despite being one of the strongest heroes in the MCU roster, based on her comic book history. Hopefully, that's all going to change once the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision rolls out. Headlined by Olsen and Paul Bettany, who plays Vision, the project is expected to fully establish her as a leading member of the Avengers in Phase 4.

If things panned out differently, however, Olsen may not be the actress playing Scarlet Witch in the MCU. As they typically do with big roles, Marvel Studios had their casting crew search for the perfect actor to portray the role in Age of Ultron. Director Joss Whedon was vocal about debuting the mutant in the franchise, and according to reports the early concept design for Scarlet Witch was based on Saoirse Ronan. When asked about the possibility of landing the gig in 2013, the Irish actress said she heard about rumors that Marvel was eyeing her for the part and expressed interest in it. While she didn't nab the Marvel role, Ronan went on to do other great projects including Greta Gerwig's Lady Bird in 2017, in which she portrayed the title role of Christine "Lady Bird" McPherson. Her performance won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical; and got Academy Award, BAFTA and SAG nominations for Best Actress. In 2018, she played Mary Stuart in Mary Queen of Scots opposite Margot Robbie's Elizabeth I of England. Last years, Ronan reunited with Gerwig in the filmmaker's adaptation of Little Women. Meanwhile, she's set to appear in Wes Anderson's ensemble film, The French Dispatch which is set for release in October.

Aside from Ronan, two other actresses were vying for the role of Scarlet Witch in the MCU. Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer was reportedly briefly considered for the role. The actress is best known for her performance as Alison DiLaurentis in the Freeform young adult thriller show, Pretty Little Liars. After losing the role of Wanda to Olsen, Pieterse appeared in couple of big screen projects including the 2017 film Coin Heist, as well as The Honor List. She also competed in Dancing with the Stars season 25. Pieterse is currently reprising her role as Alison in the spin-off Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionist. Former child star Lindsay Lohan apparently auditioned for the MCU part as well. Since then, she had a recurring role in the British black comedy series, Sick Note. She's currently a judge in The Masked Singer Australia.

Considering Olsen's performance as the character, it's safe to say that the public is generally pleased with her in the role. Aside from staring in WandaVision, the actress is also set to reprise his role in an upcoming film in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This makes her the only MCU cast member who is confirmed to appear in both the big and small screen in the franchise's Phase 4, which could be an indication that she's being positioned to become one of the new faces of the universe moving forward.
